Decorator Crab of the family Majidae finds refuge in an
Iridescent Glassy Sponge (Callyspongia vaginalis). Jackson
Bay, the location of this habitat, is at Little Cayman Island, and is
the richest spot for invertebrate life that we have encountered.
Please allow us to clarify a point. All of our images are as
found. The environment with its resident life is exactly as we
found it to be, and we have attempted minimal impact on our
surroundings.
As a point of interest, we have found that the mouth of the sponge (Callyspongia vaginalis) is frequently occupied by crabs, shrimp, or even fish (1), (2), (3). However, we have never found Brittlestars, that are so common in many other sponges (4), (5), (6), (7). Jackson Bay, Little Cayman Island - Depth 80 feet or 24 meters |
