A large, deep-water Xestosponge (Xestospongia muta) on an exposed wall deep off the Bloody Bay Wall at Little Cayman Island. Bloody Bay Wall, Little Cayman Island - Depth 185 feet or 56 meters |
* It is interesting that the
attractive little Dumpling Sponge (1) can
grow to the large example pictured above. In the environment
pictured above, there is a definite eerie feeling, perhaps because of
the depth. The sponge mouth is large (nearly 1.5 meters), and juts
out from the wall like a gargoyle. Seeing such a sponge is worth
the short time one has to visit when using compressed air. Bloody Bay Wall, Little Cayman Island - Depth 185 feet or 56 meters |
