*The above image was taken in the early hours of morning, with mist rising from Laguna Pátzcuaro. As we climbed along the winding pathway leading upward toward the statue of José Maria Morelos, one of the great heroes of Mexico's War of Independence, the backlit view of the village church tower came into view, along with the roofs of nearby houses, making a memorable scene. The church itself is worth a visit, with the tower containing large, hanging brass bells. The Statue of Morelos dominates the island, and is worth a visit itself. It is hollow, and for a small sum you may enter. Within, along the interior walls, the life of Morelos is depicted in murals painted by Ramon Alba de la Canal and other great Mexican muralists. The community Janitzio has long conserved its customs. language, and clothing, and one of its major festivities is the celebration of "El Dia de los Muertos" (The Day of the Dead). |
