Underwater Photography

Islas Galápagos, Ecuador, South America

*At the time of our dives, the descent to deeper waters at Isla Champion was an unforgettable experience.  From about 8 meters to 14 meters we encountered a considerable extent of reef-building corals, probably  (Pavona gigantea ).  For some reason this area had a feeling of the primitive that was totally lacking in the coral gardens of the Caribbean and the Indo-pacific.  Creole Fish occurred in great assemblies, but when we tried to photograph them, they would deliberately be scattered by mischievous female Sea Lions.

Below 14 meters, the slopes were covered with boulders, all of which were dotted with marine organisms.  In the sheltered niches at we found abundant and unusual marine life, including an unusual tan and brown soft coral (1)(2)
