Beautiful Marine Sponges

Caribbean Underwater Photography Gallery II

 *  In this scene, the dominant feature is a large, beautifully colored, trumpet-shaped Iridescent Glassy sponge (Callyspongia plicifera).  The brown sponges on the right are (Agelus sp.), and the pink Rope Sponge is possibly (Gelloides ramosa), though missing the usual Zoanthids (Parazoanthus parasiticus).  In the background in the upper left corner can be seen Sea Feathers (Pseudopterogorgia sp.) and what appear to be a Purple Rope Sponge (Haliclona hogarthii).  Visible in the lower left corner is the Deep Water Gorgonian (Icilogorgia schrammi).  The small fish in the middle foreground is the Fairy Basslet (Gramma loreto).  We have observed that the Iridescent Glassy Sponge can serve as a refuge for a number of marine creatures (1), (2)
